East Falmouth, Massachusetts - Falmouth's largest community
With about 6,000 inhabitants, the census-designated place of East Falmouth is Falmouth's most populated section. It's also more densely-inhabited than other parts of the Cape, as the majority of the houses sit on the shores of four ponds that jet inland from Vineyard Sound.
The relatively high population density in East Falmouth helps create a sense of belonging in each of the community's neighborhoods, as residents get the chance to meet other people on their streets and make new friends. Many areas have community associations, as well, which pay for and maintain recreational facilities for residents.
And that's not to say that the properties are crowded in East Falmouth, as most houses have large yards and enough separation that residents always have privacy.
Route 28 intersects the northern part of East Falmouth, so residents can reach neighboring communities like Mashpee, Teaticket, and downtown Falmouth in minutes, or continue to Hyannis or Woods Hole.
East Falmouth has a wonderful sense of community, and once you buy a home here, you'll find it easy to fit right into it
East Falmouth's history
Settlers first arrived in the area that is now Falmouth in 1660, with the establishment of the town following in 1686. Through these early days, industries like sheep farming, whaling, shipping, and salt works sustained the community, with the municipality having about 50 sheep per square mile by 1837.
In the mid to late 1800s, the arrival of the railroad made it easy for wealthy elites from Boston and New York to build summer homes on Cape Cod, with East Falmouth becoming a popular destination because of its water access.
Today, East Falmouth remains a fashionable summertime retreat but also has a fair number of full-time residents.
The neighborhoods of East Falmouth, MA
It's easy to distinguish between neighborhoods in East Falmouth because there are tidal creeks, or ponds, separating them.
The westernmost neighborhood is Acapesket, which sits on Great Pond, Green Pond, and Vineyard Sound and is home to the Shorewood Drive Association and the Great Harbors Resident Association. Great Harbors alone has over 400 houses and is home to a recreation complex, two boat docks, and a beach.
Next to Acapesket is Davisville, a community with direct access to Green Pond and Bourne's Pond, along with Vineyard Sound. There is a marina in Davisville, making it an excellent area from which to get to the ocean.
East of Davisville is Menauhant, home of East Falmouth's lone public beach and the Menauhant Yacht Club. Menauhant sits on Bourne's Pond and Eel Pond, in addition to Vineyard Sound.
Finally, there's Seacoast Shores, a densely populated private community association with over 900 homes and a private beach on Eel Pond. Seacoast Shores is the only community in East Falmouth without direct access to Vineyard Sound, although residents can get there through Eel Pond or Waquoit Bay.
Things to do in East Falmouth, Massachusetts
There isn't a whole lot of business in East Falmouth, MA, as it's mostly residential. Most commercial properties reside along Route 28, where you'll find Bad Martha Farmer's Brewery, one of the Cape's best-known brewpubs, in addition to a few other restaurants and shops.
If you have a boat, all four communities in East Falmouth have at least one marina or yacht club, so you don't need a waterfront property to keep your vessel in the water.
Menauhant Town Beach is a popular escape in the summer. Although the beach is narrow, it stretches along the coast for a reasonable distance and has two large parking areas. The beach has a laidback vibe and is a great place to collect shells.
When you want to get away from it all, you can head over to Washburn Island State Park, which is part of the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. The island is only accessible by private boat but is one of the Cape's most pristine hiking destinations. You can also camp on the island with a reservation.
