Indoor Swimming Lessons on Cape Cod

swimming lessons on cape cod

Swimming is a mandatory skill to have when living on Cape Cod because there's water everywhere. If you have kids, ensuring they have even basic ability in the water provides peace of mind as they play on the area's beaches and near the kettle ponds.

If you have children who don't yet know how to swim, or if you could use a refresher course, there are many different indoor options on the Cape.

These swimming lesson providers allow interested parties to learn water safety in a controlled environment without worrying about waves or other natural hazards making the process more challenging. Most of these venues are also open year-round.

Here's a look at some of the learn-to-swim programs on Cape Cod.

Cape Cod Swim Club

The best-known local organization offering swimming lessons is the Cape Cod Swim Club. Their classes take place at various locations all over the Cape.

The Cape Cod Swim Club hosts most of its courses at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay. This venue is home to the Cape Cod Swim Club's competitive teams and is also where all lessons for swimmers ages five and up take place. The pool has six lanes and is 25 yards long, providing plenty of space to learn.

For younger kids, there are lessons at the Atria Woodbriar and ShoreWay Acres Inn in Falmouth and Willy's World Wellness & Conference Center in North Eastham. The Cape Cod Swim Club also sometimes offers lessons at YMCA Cape Cod, although that venue offers separate classes on its own. You can get lessons in Plymouth at the Hilton Garden Inn, as well.

AquaSafe Cape Cod

AquaSafe Cape Cod hosts its swim lessons at Sandwich High School on Quaker Meeting House Road. These lessons begin for kids as young as six months of age and go all the way up to advanced classes for 12-year-olds.

In addition to the basic classes, AquaSafe Cape Cod hosts the Firefish Swim Team, which attends meets all over the East Coast. There's lifeguard training available, too, making AquaSafe an organization that can teach swimmers of all levels.

And if you're an adult looking for somewhere to swim, AquaSafe hosts indoor and outdoor events all year round. The adult masters and lap swims are incredibly popular with Cape Cod residents and give you the chance to meet like-minded people.

YMCA Cape Cod

We mentioned that YMCA Cape Cod hosts some lessons by the Cape Cod Swim Club, but they also operate their own programs.

Swim lessons are available for adults and children at this venue in West Barnstable, teaching swimmers of all skill levels essential proficiency in the water. There are adaptive swim lessons for children with impairments, and private lessons are available, too.

If you or your child want to spend summers as a lifeguard, the YMCA offers Cape Cod residents water safety courses. You must be at least 15 years old to take the classes, which include CPR, AED, first aid, and oxygen administration. Those who have already completed the course can take a re-certification lesson, as well.

A lot is going on at YMCA Cape Cod, so check them out if you're looking for a convenient place to get in the water.

Mashpee Fitness Center

The Mashpee Fitness Center doesn't focus on lessons, but they offer them at various times throughout the year. There are clinics, private lessons, and stroke development classes for more experienced swimmers and introductory courses for those with less water experience.

The classes at the Mashpee Fitness Center tend to be smaller than at other venues, and the water is very warm, making it one of the more comfortable places to learn to swim.

Private Clubs

Cape Cod has numerous private clubs that offer swimming lessons to members and their kids. These venues provide a unique experience because you can send your kids to their classes while you relax by the pool with a drink, enjoy the sun on the beach, or have a meal in the restaurant.

Some of the private clubs offering swim lessons include the Hyannis Yacht Club, The Club at New Seabury, and the Wychmere Beach Club. Of course, you'll need a membership at one of these clubs for your kids to participate in the lessons, but if you're looking at memberships anyway, the swim classes are an additional bonus.

You'll have to inquire with each club about membership availability.

Finding the Right Fit

Every organization on this list offers something a little different, so you'll want to shop around to find the program that best meets your needs.

Additionally, most of the pools hosting these programs are on the Upper and Mid Cape; you'll want to make strategic plans if you're buying a home on the Lower or Outer Cape.
