Haunted Cape Cod

Cape Cod is known for many things; beautiful views, relaxing coastal breezes, beaches, lobster rolls, but did you know that Cape Cod is said to be one of the most haunted places in the country? With some houses dating back to the 1600’s, it’s no wonder there might be a few restless souls who aren’t quite ready to leave the Cape. With over 400 years of history, there have been multiple sightings of apparitions and voices being heard on both land and sea.

One particular haunting is Highfield Hall. Located in Falmouth, the mansion was built in 1878 and was one of the first “grand compounds” to ever be built on Cape Cod. The house belonged to the very wealthy Beebe family and then was renovated by Historic Highfeild in 1994 and became a center of cultural and community life. There have been many sightings of a middle aged woman looking out the front window toward the garden; many locals believe that it is homeowner Mary Louisa Beebe who died of cancer at the age of 45 in that very room. Many guests have also claimed to hear high heels walking down the main staircase at night, as well as one case where a guest actually claimed to see a woman lunging toward him down the main staircase.

Another famous haunting on the Cape is The Dillingham House Bed and Breakfast located in Sandwich,. The house was built in 1650 by Simeon Dillingham in Sagamore and later moved to Sandwich by his grandson, Branch Dillingham, in 1800. In 1813, Branch committed suicide and only a few short weeks later his wife Ruth died, leaving their nine young children orphaned. Accounts of ghostly encounters have included doors slamming, latches lifting, children running throughout the house, footsteps when no one is home, and even empty rocking chairs. Many people believe that the ghost is Branch himself, or possibly the orphaned children. The Griffith family, who currently owns the Bed and Breakfast, has also commented on these patterns, saying that the activity increases in October.

Last but not least, our very own Kinlin Grover office in Brewster has had multiple ghost sightings.

We can’t necessarily blame them—we all know the feeling, when summer time is almost over and you spend your last day lounging at the beach, nobody is ever ready to leave Cape Cod!
