Cotuit High Ground Country Club: Golf at a Slower Pace

Cape Cod is full of championship-level golf courses that are scenic, challenging, and competitive places to play. If you love golf, the Cape has you covered.

But what if you want to relax and enjoy a laidback round of golf without feeling overmatched by the course or rushed by more serious players?

In Cotuit, you can visit the High Ground Country Club, a short, par-3 course that offers a fun place for novice golfers to get a round in, and a beautiful location to learn the game without other golfers breathing down your neck.

At the same time, the course is challenging enough that more experienced players can use it to focus on their short games.

This family-owned course that first opened in 1929 is located on Crockers Neck Road, just south of Lewis Pond, and is well worth checking out if you're in search of a simple round of golf in a relaxing environment.

Playing the Course

You'll never mistake the High Ground Country Club for the Old Course at St. Andrews, Pebble Beach, or the Augusta National Golf Club, as it only has nine holes and is 1083 to 1245 yards in length, depending on which tees you use. Every hole is a par 3, except for the third hole, which is a 260-yard par 4 from the back tees.

The course isn't always in the best of shape, at least if you're used to playing some of the country's more prestigious locations. At the same time, the High Ground Country Club has a rustic charm to it. It's not pretentious, and it doesn't pretend to be anything more than a scenic place to escape for a round of golf in the summer, which is what keeps its members coming back year after year.

Of course, there's a little bit more to playing golf here than the short holes. For instance, since the course is on a relatively small plot of land, the fairways cross each other. If you end up on a fairway, you'll have to watch for players on nearby holes.

There's also the fact that the greens are minuscule, so you won't have a whole lot of space to operate with when making a shot. There are some steep areas to contend with around the holes, too. If you end up missing a shot, the incline could carry your ball away, leaving you with a delicate chip to make par.

Length isn't an issue for most players here, but don't let the course fool you; the narrow and steep sections can make for a challenging round if you aren't on your game.

Enjoying the Clubhouse

Even if you aren't a golfer, you can spend some time in the clubhouse at the Cotuit High Ground Country Club. It isn't a fancy building by any means, as it sits in a farmhouse from the 1800s, but members love the simplicity of this snack bar.

Don't expect a fine dining experience in the clubhouse; the staff prepares most meals on the outdoor grill on the deck. It has a bar, however, so you can grab a hot dog or hamburger and a beer after playing a round.

Members and drop-in players alike love relaxing on the patio or sitting in the dining room after playing the course, as there's no better way to cap off a relaxing day on a Cape Cod course.

Events and Celebrations

The Cotuit High Ground Country Club is available to host all kinds of events for residents during the spring, summer, and fall. Some people choose to hold their birthday parties at the course, while cookouts, weddings, family reunions, parties, and meetings are also common occurrences.

The event room at the course can hold 80 people, making it large enough for gatherings with family and friends.

If you'd like to hold an event at the golf course, give them a call or email to start the booking process.

Memberships are Available

There are memberships currently available at the Cotuit High Ground Country Club. You can choose between individual, couples, family, junior, and clubhouse-only memberships, depending on your situation.

Keep in mind that the golf course is open to the general public at a rate of $20 per round for adults and $15 for seniors, juniors, and tee times after 4:00 PM. Membership, if you go that route, includes all green fees for the entire year.

Public golf access is possible from 8:00 AM until 8:00 PM every night of the week except for Wednesday and Friday. Wednesday is men's night, and Friday is the course's weekly pizza scramble tournament. Tuesday is ladies' night, as well, so there are limited tee times available.

Generally, you won't need to book a tee time in advance if you have a membership, but it's a good idea on weekends, just in case an event or tournament is being held.

Cape Cod is full of great places to play a round of golf, but if you're looking to become a member at a Cotuit course, you can't beat the value provided by the High Ground Country Club.
