A Friendly Hello from Historic Barnstable Village

As you stroll down the brick lined sidewalks of historic Barnstable Village, you’ll likely be greeted with a friendly “hello” from more than one person along the way. Friendliness is often what comes to mind when thinking about this quaint Cape Cod community centered around the “Old King’s Highway”, now Route 6A. This charming seaside village serves as the county seat for Barnstable County which includes all towns on Cape Cod.

From luxurious multi-million dollar homes with sweeping water views to charming antiques in the heart of the Village, Kinlin Grover offers several listings in this picturesque community known for its hospitality and history.

Standing sentry over the Village center is the bronze statue of James Otis Jr., venerated Barnstable native and member of the founding fathers. It was Otis who had helped galvanize the revolutionary movement during a passionate 5-hour speech against Britain’s search and seizure decree (Writs of Assistance) at the Massachusetts State House in 1761.

Otis’ patriotic spirit can still be felt in Barnstable Village today. Across the street from Otis’ bronze statue stands the historic Barnstable Restaurant and Tavern, 3176 Main Street, Route 6A. You feel a strong sense of community just about everywhere in Barnstable Village. The bustling Barnstable Market, 3220 Main Street is the quintessential nerve center of the Village. Offering a variety of groceries, prepared foods, deli items, take-out pizza and an extensive wine selection, the market is the place to greet “regulars” gathering supplies for the kitchen, table and more. Nirvana Coffee Company, 3206 Main Street, Route 6A, is the perfect spot to meet up with friends and chat over a warm mocha latte inside, with its hip vibe and comfy seating, or outside, relaxing in an Adirondack chair.

The art of browsing is also popular in Barnstable Village. Shoppers are often drawn to OZ, 3217 Main Street, Route 6A, a boutique rich in women’s fashion, jewelry, accessories and shoes. The theme here is bohemian, eclectic and stylish. Looking to spruce up the interior of your home? You can find plenty of creative ideas at Neutral Territory, 3179 Main Street, Route 6A. From elegant lamps to chairs to bedding and bath accessories, this wonderful store, located next to the old courthouse, offers unique finds for home décor projects.

The Historic Sturgis Public Library, 3090 Main Street, is dedicated to providing services and resources to meet the needs of a contemporary community while preserving and promoting Cape Cod history.

The Dolphin Restaurant, 3250 Main Street, is located in the heart of the village. The Dolphin has been a staple of village life for three generations and is recognized as one of the best seafood restaurants in the area. Local diners as well as vacationers appreciate the friendly, comfortable ambience and fresh local seafood. If you are looking for dinner with a waterfront view, Mattakeese Wharf, 273 Millway Road, delivers both. The lobster plate and clam rolls are both quite popular, but nothing can beat the view over Barnstable Harbor, especially at sunset. Mattakeese Wharf also boasts live entertainment during the summer season.

Other entertainment options in the village include the legendary Barnstable Comedy Club, 3171 Main Street, Route 6A, which is entering its 94th season. But don’t let the name fool you. This is no “standup comedy" lounge. Instead, Barnstable Comedy Club is an active community theater open to all residents who appreciate live theater and love to perform. Upcoming performances include South Pacific, Leading Ladies and Lost in Yonkers.

The beauty of Barnstable Village’s historic streets and colonial architecture might only be matched (or outmatched) by the natural coastal elements of the sea and sand found nearby. The beaches are among the most breathtaking in all of Cape Cod. Sandy Neck offers residents nearly 5,000 acres of unspoiled beaches, dunes, marshes and maritime forests. Mill Way Beach also provides stunning views, refreshing swimming and long stretches of sand ideal for morning walks or sunset strolls.
