Buying a home in East Dennis places you right on Cape Cod Bay with easy access to all other parts of Cape Cod. It also puts you in a historic village exhibiting the Cape’s old-world charm and just enough activity to keep you busy all year round.

East Dennis’ history

Settlers first arrived in the East Dennis, Massachusetts, area in 1639, and the village, along with other parts of Dennis, became part of Yarmouth later that year. During the early days, sections of present-day East Dennis were referred to as Sesuit and Quivet, names that remain on some of the village’s natural landmarks.

In 1739, the town of Dennis separated from Yarmouth and was incorporated. From there, East Dennis would become an essential maritime village, mainly because it was home to the Shiverick Shipyard, a famous boat-building factory in the mid-1800s.

The Shiverick Shipyard was located at Sesuit Creek, which has since received a make-over and become Sesuit Harbor. Starting in the 1970s, officials identified a need for a deep water harbor in Dennis and decided to extend Sesuit Creek, making it 100-feet wide in some spots and six-feet deep. The job was completed in 1982, creating an exciting new destination for the people of East Dennis.

East Dennis’ location on the Old King’s Highway also made it an important village in Cape Cod’s history, as many of the region’s first settlers and merchants set-up there. The list includes Captain John Sears, who many recognize as the inventor of saltworks.

The neighborhoods of East Dennis, MA

East Dennis, Massachusetts, is broken into a few distinct areas from which to choose when buying a home in the village.

In the north, there are homes near the village’s beaches, including a subdivision around the harbor. Houses also spread into the area around Cole Pond Bog, which offers a secluded environment with plenty of tree cover.

Just south of the beaches is the village’s downtown area, which includes the Old King’s Highway. This neighborhood is where you’ll find the majority of East Dennis’ commercial activity, and it’s also the location of Dennis Pines Golf Course.

The west side of town borders Dennis Village, and there are homes in the area close to Scargo Lake. There’s an industrial park here, too, which has a few contractors for hire.

East Dennis’ south end is a mix of conservation land and residences. This area borders South Dennis, which has some highly populated neighborhoods nearby.
