Dennis Port, MA Homes for Sale

Dennis Port, Massachusetts – Beachfront living on Nantucket Sound

The town of Dennis features five villages, the southernmost of which is called Dennis Port. In Dennis Port, you'll find a population of about 3,000 people, and some of the Cape's most temperate beaches, making it a perfect area for swimming and windsurfing.

Dennis Port also features commercial areas on Lower County Road and Main Street, along with an industrial area on Great Western Road, which also acts as the village's border with South Dennis.

Locals believe that Dennis Port is the only section of Dennis on the Lower Cape, due to its downtown area connecting seamlessly with West Harwich, with the four other villages sitting firmly on the Mid-Cape. There's nothing official in this regard, however.

Overall, you'll find that Dennis Port has a nice mix of lively beaches, dining and shopping areas, and residential zones, making it a quintessential Cape Cod location in which to put down some roots.

Dennis Port, MA's neighborhoods

Since Dennis Port is relatively small geographically, with only three square miles of land, it's challenging to differentiate between the village's neighborhoods.

One of the more extensive residential section sits south of Main Street and west of the Plashes Conservation Area and Shad Hole Road. This neighborhood is mostly homes, although it has a few restaurants and three of Dennis' best beaches.

There's another neighborhood east of Shad Hole Road and including Main Street that is probably the town's busiest section. The Main Street area is full of shops and restaurants, and this is also where you'll find Dennis Port Village Green. South of Main Street is mainly residential, although there are some restaurants, a recreation area, and some great beaches.

The north end of Dennis Port is sparsely populated, as it features Swan Pond and some heavily forested sections. Most of the homes are around the pond, and there are some businesses on Great Western Road.

A brief history of Dennis Port, Massachusetts

When settlers John Crowe, Antony Thacher, and Thomas Howes first settled in modern-day Dennis in 1639, the town became part of Yarmouth. At this time, Dennis was known as the East Precinct and didn't become a separate municipality until 1793.

Dennis Port received its current name in 1850. Previously, it had been known as Crooks Neck or Crookers Neck, after the man who sold the land to the settlers in 1639, Samuel Crook.

Many of the streets and beaches around Dennis Port feature the names of historic residents. The list includes Glendon Road, named after a retired Marine who donated the land to the town, Inman Road, which is named for the Inman family, including Isaiah, one-time sheriff of Barnstable County, and Raycroft Beach, named after Louis B. Raycroft.

Things to do in Dennis Port

You'll never run out of things to do in Dennis Port because it's one of the Cape's most spirited locations.

For starters, you have the beaches, including Haigis, Glendon, Sea Street, Raycroft, Depot Street, and Inman, all of which enjoy the warm water and gentle surf of Nantucket Sound. Sea Street has the largest parking area, while Raycroft and Depot Street are small and more challenging to access with a vehicle.

When searching for a night on the town, Main Street and Lower Country Road are your best bets, as they're lined with restaurants and bars. There's also an open-air bar in a hotel near Depot Street Beach that features live music in the summer.

Speaking of music, Dennis Port Village Green has a summer concert series at its gazebo where locals and visitors can experience live music every Tuesday at 6:00 PM in July and August.

For outdoor activities, Sea View Park has tennis courts, a playground, and some walking trails. You can also hike through the Plashes Conservation Land, but keep in mind that this 48-acre park doesn't have any marked trails, so you'll want to bring navigation equipment.
